Review #796; American Single Malt #11: Westland Single Cask #6062 6yr “K&L Select”

This single cask from Westland Distillery, located in Seattle Washington, was aged for 4 years in new charred oak before being aged 2.5 years more in a maple wood barrel that previously held Jack Daniels. This was dumped and bottled at cask strength with no color added, was non-chill filtered, and selected for K&L wines located in California.

ABV: 54.4%

Nose: Mesquite, Charred Brown Sugar, Black Tea, Tannins, Bread

Palate: Medium light mouthfeel, Mesquite, Burnt Brown sugar, Black Tea, Tannins, Allspice

Finish: Medium length finish, Black Tea, Tannins, Burnt Brown Sugar, Allspice

Rating: 4/10

This is not bad, but not the best example from Westland. It has decent flavors, but I feel like the Maplewood barrel brings far too much to the table here. The sweetness and bitter are not well balanced and have random spikes throughout. I thought this sounded like a weird combo when I read about it, and it pretty much is.
