Review #760; Rum #194: Rhum Pere Labat Familiale (6yr)

This is an aged Rhum Agricole from Distillerie Poisson on the island of Marie-Galante, which is a part of Guadeloupe. This rhum comes from four varieties of local sugarcane, which is pressed, fermented for 72 hours, distilled on a copper creole column still, then aged for 6 years in a 200L ex-bourbon barrel before being bottled with no additives.

ABV: 42%

Nose: Vanilla, Slight Vegetal, Pear, Cinnamon

Palate: Light Mouthfeel, Apple, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Bell Peppers, Pear.

Finish: Short Finish, Vanilla, Apple, Cinnamon, Black Tea.

Rating: 5/10

This is a good Rhum. The flavors are nice and balanced, with a surprising amount of fruit coming out. Vanilla and cinnamon round out the fruits as well with some black tea bitter notes coming presumably from the barrel. While this rum is good, I feel as though the barrel dominates too much, taking away from the base distillate. This is well made, but I feel some extra proof points would help it out.
