Review #712; Rum #162: Foursquare 14yr Redoubtable

This is a bottling from Barbados rum producer Foursquare in their Exceptional Cask Selection series. This one was aged for 14 years in a mix of Ex-bourbon and Ex-Madeira casks in Barbados before being bottled with no additives. Let’s see how this one holds up.

ABV: 61%

Nose: Black Pepper, Cherry, toasted coconut, Oak Spice, Cinnamon, Vanilla Bean, Banana, Guava

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, touch of heat, toasted coconut, cinnamon, oak spice, black pepper, leather, tobacco leaf, raisins, figs.

Finish: Long length finish, Black Pepper, touch of leather, tobacco leaf, cinnamon, oak spice, cocoa nibs.

Rating: 8/10

This is an excellent rum. The Madeira cask compliments and brings out many flavors that accent the ex-bourbon cask very well. Rich fruits, spices, and oak all come together to form a great flavor profile. The mouthfeel is oily and thick feeling while the finish washes over you for a while. I generally do not find Foursquare to be super exciting, but this is one of their releases that truly stand out to me.
