This is a rum from the now closed Caroni distillery based in Trinidad. Divisive amongst the rum community, some people see this as a bad rum that has been marketed to success, some see this an a great rum that is vastly different from current offerings. This bottling was aged for 16 years in ex-bourbon casks in the EU before being bottled with no additives and was non-chill filtered.
ABV: 55.1%
Nose: Dark chocolate, cherry cough syrup, motor oil, diesel fuel, Orange Peel, industrial fire, nutmeg, black pepper. Quite pungent.
Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel. Diesel fuel, dark chocolate, cherry cough syrup, mango, vanilla, black pepper, industrial fire smoke, faint orange peel,
Finish: Longer finish. Cherry cough syrup, industrial fire smoke, motor oil, nutmeg, vanilla bean, dark chocolate. Lingers and really coats the tongue.
Rating: 8/10
I fall firmly in the camp of this being an excellent rum. Whether that is due to being aged too long, the stills being off, or whatever reason Caroni has this unique dirty industrial funk to it I really like what It brings to the table. This is an excellent example of that drawing on that heavy, dirty, funky, base while still bringing some fruits and spices to the table to help balance it out. A real winner of a rum for me.
