Review #614; Rye #50: New Riff Maltster (Rye)

This is from the Maltster series from New Riff, who decided to play around with malted grains as an experiment with their bourbon. This bottling has a mash bill of 65% corn, 30% malted rye, and 5% malted barley. It was aged for at least 5 years before being bottled at 50% with no chill filtered.

ABV: 50%

Nose: Vanilla frosting, rye spice, black pepper

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Lemon zest, green apple, black pepper, vanilla frosting

Finish: Medium length. Dry. Black Pepper, lemon zest, tobacco leaf, slight breadiness

Rating: 6/10

This is a very good bourbon. It has good flavor, nice complexity, and none of the youthful notes of the wheat version. Classic bourbon flavors with some rye spice thrown in makes for a pleasant and delicious drink. It doesn’t rise above very good for me though.
