This rum comes to us from the Aficionados, who picked this and then sold it via Fine Drams. This comes from New Yarmouth, a sister distillery of Appleton, which produces the world famous Wray and Nephew Overproof. This unaged molasses based pot still rum is fermented for a day and a half. This rum clocks in at 500-700 g/hLAA of esters and has a botting run of 600 bottles. Let’s see how the group selected on this journey of funk.
ABV: 69%
Nose: Classic Jamaican Hogo, over-rip fruits, mango, pineapple, vanilla cream, allspice, slight brine.
Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel. Well behaved heat for the proof, rotting fruits, mango, pineapple bark, tart blueberries, vanilla cream, allspice, black pepper,.
Finish: Medium length finish. Fruits up front, mango, pineapple, brine, hogo, vanilla cream, allspice, nutmeg, black pepper.
Rating: 7/10
It’s well known if you ready my rum reviews I love the funk, the hogo, and this lives up to the. It doesn’t reach DOK levels but this is a classic unaged high proof Jamaican. Tons of over-ripe fruits, spices, with some salinity and faint meatiness to round it all out. Now I’ll admit this has been getting used more for cocktails than neat sipping for me, but I think its worth the pickup as it leans pretty savory all things considered.
