Review #573; Rum #89: Foursquare ECS 12yr 2008

This rum comes to us from the Barbados base distiller Foursquare. These barrels were laid down in 2008 and bottled in 2020, giving us a rum that is 12 years of age. A blend of pot and column still, this was bottled with no additives to it and aged entirely in ex-bourbon barrels. Let’s see how it stands up.

ABV: 60%

Nose: Vanilla frosting, oak spice, black pepper, dark chocolate, coconut

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Dark Chocolate, vanilla, coconut, a touch of heat, oak spice.

Finish: Medium length finish. Warm, desserty. Vanilla frosting, black pepper, dark chocolate, coconut

Rating: 6/10

It is remarkable how consistent the profiles are that Foursquare is able to create with these vintages. They are always a rock solid, very good, rum made with great flavor and no additives. Lots of bourbon esque notes from the cask as well as some solid spices and a touch of heat from the 12 years of ageing. For me this is a very good rum, but it does not rise above that. Even so, I like keeping a bottle of one on hand to show to friends and family who don’t have any experience with unadulterated, high proof rum as it is very approachable for the whiskey crowd (Foursquare is what got me into rum). However, the vintages are blended so well that I personally do not see the need to own more than 1 of them.
