Review #547; Rum #72: Cadenhead Caroni 20yr (1998) TMCG

This comes to us from IB Cadenhead’s. This rum is sourced from the now closed distillery Caroni based out of Trinidad. It was distilled on a column still in January of 1998 then bottled in June of 2018.

ABV: 62.4%

Nose: Diesel fuel, motor oil, vanilla cream, mango, black pepper, orange peel,

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Diesel Fuel, orange peel, over-ripe tropical fruits, mango,

Finish: Medium length warm. Tart over-ripe blueberries, vanilla cream, mango, motor oil,

Rating: 6/10

This is good. While it is what you expect from a Caroni, brash, aggressive, full of motor oil and mechanic shop notes, this lacks the balance some other Caronis I have tasted seemed to have. This is almost all straight up mechanics shop, with just faint peppering of fruit and spice to balance it out. I still find it good, but this isn’t one I would rush out to buy.
