Review #521; American Single Malt #4: Copperworks 3yr (2016) SMWS 143.1 “Sea Buckthorn Tea Time”

This is a bottling from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, an independent bottler. In this they have bottled a 3 year old cask from American Single Malt Producer Copperworks distilling co. This whiskey was aged for 3 years in a New Charred Oak Barrel, then bottled at cask strength with no color added and was non-chill filtered.

ABV: 60%

Nose: Vanilla, Oak Spice, slight breadiness, youthful grain, green apple, apricot.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel. Faint Green Apple, Vanilla, grain forward, bit of youth is apparent, apricot.

Finish: Medium length, warm. Pop of Vanilla, faint green apple, oak spice, apricot.

Rating: 6/10

For being 3 years old this is pretty good. The youth pops in and out on occasion as a youthful grain note but not in a negative or overpowering way. The fruit and dark chocolate notes carry this thing to be one of the tastiest and most interesting American Single Malts I have tried. A little bit more age would help it but this is a craft American distillery doing Malt Whiskey the right way.
