Review #492; Rye #45: New Riff Backsetter Rye

This is the 2nd iteration of the New Riff Whiskey Club peated experiment. When distilled, they used a backset collected from peat smoked barley used to age this rye. It comes with a 95% rye, 5% Malted Rye Peated backset, was aged at least 4 years, then bottled at 50% without chill filtration.

ABV: 50%

Nose: Green Rye Spice, light green apple, allspice,

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, rye spice, green apple, black pepper, herbalness, faint peat

Finish: Medium length finish, warm, rye spice, black pepper, oak spice, faint peat, herbalness.

Rating: 6/10

This is slightly better than the peated bourbon, but much like the Wendy’s commercial, I am left asking “Where’s The Peat?” This is a good, 100% 4 year old rye that I would be happy to drink anyday, but next time New Riff does a peated run with their rye they should dial up the peat just a bit. If you have experience with peat and enjoy it, there won’t be much in here.
