Review #480; Rum #51: Ultimatum Jamaica – Demerara 11yr

This is a rum blend bottled by IB Ultimatum. This is a blend of Jamaica and Guyana Rum that was aged in ex-bourbon barrels for 8 years, then finished for another 3 in a Sherry Whisky hogshead from the now closed Imperial Distillery.

ABV: 48.5%

Nose: Dark Chocolate, industrial funk, light malt, mango, toffee, burnt rubber.

Palate: Light mouthfeel, Rubbery, motor oil, mango, Burnt Brown Sugar, malt,

Finish: Medium length, burnt rubber, funky, mango dark chocolate, light pineapple.

Rating: 4/10

For me this rum is a bit of a muddled mess. I would like each of some of these components on their own. I tend to like some industrial funk, some tropical fruits, hint of chocolate and spices, but I feel the balance here is way off. None of the components mesh well together for me, the blend I think would be good, but the ex-whisky barrel marrying threw a wrench in all of it. On top of that, the nose hands you a check the sadly thin mouthfeel cannot cash. Overall, this isn’t a bad rum and is a fun experiment, but at the end of this sample I am left scratching my head at the intended goal of this bottling.
