Review #467; Rum #49: Savanna 15yr (2004) “Rum Nation)

This Rum comes to us from the bottler Rum Nation. They sourced this rum from the Savanna Distiller on Reunion Island. This rum is 15 years old, was aged in 2nd Fill Cognac casks tropically, distilled from Molasses, then bottled at cask strength.

ABV: 62.8%

Nose: Punchy nose, tropical fruits, mango, banana, light pineapple, slight must, tobacco leaf, black pepper, raisins,

Palate: Thick mouthfeel. A bit of heat, dry, oak spice, mango, black pepper, lemon zest, banana, must, raisins, figs

Finish: Long, warm, moist. Sharp black peppercorns, nice oak spice, tropical fruits, mango, guava, pineapple bark. Black Tea, lime hint

This rum goes the full range of flavors, while picking up the fruit notes from the cognac casks, and blasts you at full strength with all it has to offer. Rich tropical fruits, figs, raisins, and some spices from the cask influence. The richness of flavor comes from the somewhat intense proof, but to me that doesn’t take away from the enjoyable experience. This is a rich, full bodied, delicious rum, and one that I want a full bottle of on my shelf.
