Review #449; Gin #8: Fillier’s 38 5yr Oude Graanjenever

This comes to us from Belgium, and is a Genever aged for 5 years in American Oak and then bottled at very low proof. I had this blind so keep that in mind when reading these notes.

ABV: 38%

Nose: Sawdust, peppery, fresh green wood,

Palate: Light mouthfeel. Slight vanilla, floral hint, then fades quickly.

Finish: Short length, light floralness, faint vanilla, then fades into nothing quickly.

Rating: 4/10

Guess: This isn’t bad, but it doesn’t have much going on in it. It’s very light on flavor, hints of vanilla and some floralness pop in here and there. The nose has a slight sawdust and spice thing going on, but overall this isn’t something that I would seek out. I would guess this to be a young corn whiskey, aged 4 years or less in an ex-bourbon barrel, and bottled at 40-43% abv.

Reveal: This was revealed to be Filliers 5 year old Genever, which is pretty well on as the Genever took on a lot of influence from the American Oak cask.
