Review #444; Bourbon #107: Jack Daniel’s Heritage Barrel (2018)

Jack Daniels Heritage Barrel is a limited release from 2019. These barrels were heated and toasted before being charred, put into the barrel at 100 proof, then aged in the highest part of the barrelhouse. This release was a limited number of barrels, with each bottle coming from a single barrel. This comes to us from barrel HB-20837

ABV: 50%

Nose: Heavy Oak spice, milk chocolate, tannins, vanilla frosting, marshmallow, black pepper.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, heavy tannins, black pepper, chocolate, raisins, toffee,

Finish: Medium length finish, warm and moist. Tannins, peppery, toffee, light raisins, black pepper, oak spice.

Rating: 5/10

This release is much heralded by many, and I appreciate JD’s willingness to experiment. However, the tannins in this overpower in a way that I do not like. An overwhelming tannic note is found all throughout and it lingers a bit too long on the finish. While this is an interesting experiment, I think I’ll still reach for Jack Daniels Barrel proof when I want my Tennessee Bourbon.
