Review #400; Scotch #148: Ballechin 16yr 2003 Signatory Vintage

This is a bottling from Signatory Vintage. It is a 16 year old peated Ballechin, that was aged in an ex-Islay cask that then held sherry in it. It was bottled for the Whisky Club Luxembourg. This was bottled at cask strength with no color added, and was non-chill filtered.

ABV: 58.9%

Nose: Smoked Meaty Peat, Jammy Blackberry, Strawberry, light ash, lemon zest, Orange Peel,

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Meaty Smoked BBQ, Orange Peel, Ash, Blackberry Jam, Bacon, Salted Pork and Ham.

Finish: Medium Length, warm, Meaty Smoked Meat, Ash, Orange peel, Black Tea, Salty Ham.

Rating: 9/10

Ballechin is an aggressive and abrasive kind of experience. Rich, heavy meaty peat assaults you from the get go with some ash throw in. However, the added in sherry barrel, that held what we presume is Laphroaig at some point makes for a rich experience. Balanced out by some delicious fruits this is a killer bottle, and one that I will miss when it is gone.
