Review #267: American Single Malt #3: Westland 5yr 2011 SMWS 133.1

SMWS 133.1 Westland 5 Year “Speakeasy sneaky peeky”

This is a 5 year old American single malt from Westland, a distillery based in Washington State. This was aged all 5 years in New! Oak! Barrels! If you check out their website its pretty cool, so lets see what they have to offer in the American Single Malt Realm.

ABV: 57%

Nose: Fruity, Apricots, Malty, slight chocolate, Oak,

Palate: Malty, Dark Chocolate, Lemon Zest, Oak, Tannins, unbalanced heat.

Finish: Medium length, oak, malty, earthy, lemon.

Rating: 4/10

This has potential, but this particular bottle is just all over the place. One second it’s a nice zest, malt driven chocolatey goodness, then oak and heat come in and mess everything up. Its unbalanced and hot. I would love to try some of their offerings aged in ex-sherry, or ex-bourbon to compare.
