XXX/Three is a Dominican Rum from Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos, the makers of Ron Barceló. It was distilled in a column-still in December, 2010 from cane juice, and then left to mature in first-fill bourbon casks until 2015. It then spent a few years in a steel tank before being transferred to ex-rum cask #22 in England. It was bottled on the 27th of August, 2019, with an outturn of 240 bottles.
ABV: 62.4%
Nose: Slight Tobacco Leaf, Pepper, Vanilla, Caramel, Oak,
Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel, Heat. Vanilla, pepper, slight acetone, grassy
Finish: Medium length, Brown Sugar, Vanilla, pepper, tobacco leaf. Slight must, heat.
Rating: 5/10
There isn’t anything wrong with this Rum, but it has this musty, acetone finish that throws it off for me. Combine that with me trying it SbS with the XXX/2 and the 2 blows it out of the water. This one would probably be enjoyed by others but for me, its not a big winner. Even with all that said, getting to try an IB rum from a uniqure distillery at cask strength, no color added, and no sugar added was worth the price of admission.
