Background: This was a blind rye in a series that I tasted, took my notes, then was revealed the bottle. This rye is from Balcones, a craft distiller in Waco, Texas. This is a 100% rye that has been aged for at least 15 months in Texas before being bottled.
This is a series that I will be posting my reviews and reveal from but no the overall results. A group of us did a big rye split where we samples over a month blind samples from each other where we dedicated whole bottles, set those scores into a google doc, then pronounced a winner after it was all over.
There was a non-participating member who made sure there were no double entries so lets kick this off.
Rye #14 (the samples are not in a sequential number order)
Rye 14
ABV: 50%
Nose: Very sweet, malty, Mocha bomb, dark choclate,
Palate: Very different, mocha, dark chocolate, but the bitterness for the mocha is off putting. Tart, and tannins.
Finish: Mocha bitterness, tart tannins,
Rating: 3/10
Not enjoyable to my palate
Guess: Crap Craft Whiskey Rye of some sort,
Reveal: Balcones Rye
